. . Meeting - Team Building Night - November 27, 2006 Tonight was originally supposed to be an inside educational night but unfortunately the Quarterdeck was unable to organize enough activities. Dan decided that it would be best to spend the evening as a fun sail but upon arriving at the Marina the Quarterdeck decided that the wind was no right for a sailing evening. It was decided that we would change the night into an impromtu field trip team building dinner at the local "Kelly's" Restaurant. Attendance included: Emily, Dan, Katie, Justin, Mike, Donna and Curtis, Sean, Sabrina, Andrew, and DJ. Meeting - Educational Night Sail - November 20, 2006 In celebration of highschoolers being off school for the week of Thanksgiving Ship 956 planned a late (Midnight) educational sail for the evening. Upon arrival at the marina it was noted that the wind was blowing 15 to 20 and the original plan to go offshore and round Clearwater was rediscussed. Upon second examination it was determined that the group would take Loree Anne and would venture out of Hurricane Pass to have a look and would turn around if conditions warranted. The crew left the Marina with reefed main and motorsailed North through the channel. Upon entering the channel to transit Hurricane Pass the waves began to break and the chop got heavier. Several of the youth were nervous of the rollers breaking on the sand bar and suggested that we turn back. Dan turned the boat to begin the journey back inland just as a rolling wave crested along the beam of the boat. The wave through water over the boat and even managed to pretty well douse the cabin. Wet and Cold the crew decided that it was best to spend a little while sailing inshore before returning to the Marina. The night was called off a few hours early ending just after 2200. Attendance included: Sabrina, Dan, Will, Sean, Katie, Justin, Mr. Klein and DJ. Meeting - Official Business Meeting - November 13, 2006 Called to Order 7:10pm
Adjourned 8:21 pm Work Day October 11, 2006 Today Mr. Klein and a few youth met at the Marina to repiar Mongoose. The flooring that had given way under the mast step was removed and replaced with a custom support provided by Zeke with Ensign Spars. Quarterdeck Meeting October 06, 2006
Meeting - Fun Sail- November 06, 2006
Meeting - Fun Sail- October 30, 2006 Tonight was the Ship's monthly fun sail. There was little wind but the crew that showed up enjoyed a relaxing evening of ghosting along in the intracoastal. Sean spent almost all the night on the helm while Tristen and Sabrina cuddled up for warmth and a little extra sleep. Mike spent a lot of the night dosing off as well. Attendance included: Tristen, Sabrina, Mike, Sean, Mr. Klein and DJ. Pirate Themed Haloween Sail - October 29, 2006 In celebration of the upcoming holiday Ship 956 threw a pirate themed day sail. Members of the Ship dressed in hillarious pirate outfits and set out from the marina at 1:00 pm. The crew spent the day pulling boats over and offering them candy. Later they wound up at Caladesi island and spent several hours running around the island offering everyone they saw more candy. We even bartered with the snack shack to receive french fries in return for some of our candy. After Caladesi the Ship headed back in after a fun filled day of candy slinging pirate filled mania. Attendance included: Sabrina, Emily, Katie, Justin, Will, Donna, Dan, and Mr. Klein For pictures of the trip CLICK HERE! Meeting - Team Building (Work Night)- October 23, 2006 The QD decided that tonight would be changed to a work night to prepare Floating Bear for Sail. The Ship started by cleaning out everything from the cabin of Floating Bear. Next, members sprayed down the interior and scrubbed it down. After that was complete the water was suctioned out and only those items that will be sold with the boat were replaced. The topsides were cleaned quickly. Loree Anne was waxed and the topsides were also cleaned. Sean took many of the parts we are keeping from Floating Bear to put on the Ericson. The night ended about 8:45. Attendnace included: Sean, Andrew, Tristen, Sabrina, Dan, Emily, Mike, Mr. Klein and DJ. Meeting - Education Night Sail - October 16, 2006 Tonight was our monthly Educational Night Sail. Tonights activities included briefly practicing knots before we set out on the boats for the evening. Dan decided that all 8 members in attendnace would take one boat and opted to take Loree Anne. Once out in the sound the crew spent most of the evening practicing man over board drills. We need more practice. The wind was stiff and provided a decent practice environment for such drills. Travis was able to join us for the first time in quite a while and we were all glad to see him back. The ship returned to port early at about 8:45. Attendnace included: Travis, Dan, Will, Tristen, Sean, Donna, Mr. Klein and DJ. Meeting - Official Busines Meeting - October 9, 2006 Called to Order 1915
Sunfish Day - October 8, 2006 The Ship planned a Sunfish sail for today. Beacuse of many prior arrangements only Mr. Klein and Dan were able to make it to the event but they both had fun taking the boats out for a fun day in the sun. The weather was clear and the breeze was brisk. They sailed around St. Joseph Sound near Hurricane pass for serveral hours. Quarterdeck Meeting October 2, 2006 Called to Order 2103
Meeting - Fun Sail - October 02, 2006
Tonight was the Ship's montly fun sail. Because of attendance we took both boats. Loree Anne had Will's guest David aboard as well as former member and guest Curtis. Floating Bear had guest Mr. Murphy aboard. Both boats sailed North and engaged in a friendly cat and mouse game of chase for part of the night. In celebration of Emily's Birthday Dan's mom baked cupcakes that both vessels enjoyed during the night. Winds started heavy and subsided as the night progressed. After the meeting the Quarterdeck held its monthly meeting. Attendance included: Dan, Will and guest David, Mike, Tristen, Donna with guest Curtis, Katie and dad, Emily, Justin, Sean, Sabrina, and DJ. For pictures of the trip CLICK HERE! Overnight Fun Sail: Sept 29-30, 2006 In celebration of Mr. Klein's birthday the Ship planned an overnight sail. Meeting at the marina at 7:00pm it was decided that two boats would be needed. DJ took Dan and Will on Loree Anne while Sean, Donna, Mr. Klein, and Holly took Floating Bear. Both boats powered out of the marina and north through the Dunedin bridge. After about an hour of motoring both vessels fell off the wind and began sailing. The wind was NNW about 6-8 dropping slowly as the night progressed. Just before midnight both ships approached Three Rooker bar. After some careful surveying it was decided that both boats would tuck in between the islands two sand bars for the night. Both boats were made fast and the crew settled in for the night. About 7:00 am the next morning all crew were up and about. It was decided that we would power up to Anclote where everyone could get off the boats and walk the island for a little while. After exploring the island and cleaning the bottom of Floating Bear the crews disembarked for a day of offshore sailing. Sailing out the Tarpon Spring channel both boats sailed several miles off shore down and around Honey Moon island. About 1:30pm we sailed into Hurricane Pass and began the trip back to the Marina. Both vessels arived back at the marina about 3:00 pm where they were cleaned before everyone called it a day. Meeting - Team Building- Sept 25, 2006 . Because of the lack of an adult, Dan canceled tonight's meeting. . Meeting - Educational Night Sail- Sept 18, 2006 . Tonight the Ship took out both Loree Anne and Floating Bear. Dan decided it was time the team worked on mooring under sail. Each vessel took it's turn attempting to come as close as possible to a mooring buoy and then imitated securing to it. After each team took two attempts the call was made to spend the rest of the evening enjoying the great weather. Winds were SW at 6-9 and the temperature was pleasant. Loree Anne spent much of the evening introducing Mike, our newest member to the basics, he caught on very quickly. Both ships met at the enterance to the marina for a quick tow-in which ended a pleasant evening on the water. Attendance included: On Loree Anne: Dan, Will, Mike, Sean and DJ. On Floating Bear: Donna, Sabrina, Anthony, Tristen, Andrew, and Mr. Klein. . Meeting - Official Business Meeting- Sept 11, 2006 . Called to Order 1920 .
.. Quarterdeck Meeting Sept 2, 2006
. . Poseidon Cup Regatta 2006: Sept 1-3, 2006 . Friday: With Dan and Will's moms graciously offering to transport youth to and from this regatta the Ship assembled in several different places for the ride there. Many of the youth road with the mothers and Mr. Klein picked Sean up. After arriving at camp the Ship decided that instead of the Boy Scout summer camp tents they would all sleep in the screen enclosure. At 2100 there was a quick Skipper/Boatswain meeting. After the meeting the Ship retreated to the pavilion to work on their Ship presentation. The group collaborated to compile a two posterboard collage depicting the past, present, and future of Ship # 956. This was accomplished through marker drawings of events from the past and present. . Saturday: Reville came at 0645 with Dan undertaking his first major role as Boatswain-elect, waking the crew. After a quick opening ceremony all participating Ships met in the dining hall for some instruction and breakfast. After breakfast the events opened. First for our Ship was "Box the Compass". In this event only one crewmember was allowed to touch the board while all others stood around them for support. Tristen competed for the Ship and did a fabulous job. Next was the giant knots event. In this event the Ship was expected to tie five (5) basic knots with a 3" line weighing in at 3.5 pounds per foot. Sean took the lead in this event quickly tieing and untying the required knots. Next was the giant clove hitch. In this event a two (2) person team was expected to tie a clove hitch around a tree using 1.5" line getting no closer than eight (8) feet to the tree themselves. It was decided that this was not the event our Ship was meant to shine at. Next was the swimming events. Justin and Katie were quick to jump in and warm up taking Emily along for the three man relay. All swam remarkebly quick. Justin competed solo in the one man swimming race. Dan finished up the pool events by competing alone in the life saving competition in which he was expected to jump in at the deep end, retrieve a three (3) pound weight, bring it to the surface, then get out of the water and perform three quick repetitions of CPR on an awaiting dummy. Quickly after the pool events the team proceeded down to lake side for some of the water events. Sean and Will as well as Dan and Justin did the canoe event, paddling as fast as they could out and around a mark and back again. Three members competed in the kayak relay. Dan and Tristen competed in the timed sailing race out around a mark and back again. After all that work the Ship was hungry and decided to cool down in the pool while waiting for lunch. After lunch it was decided by the Regatta Skipper that all teams would compete at the same time in the navigation competition. The competition was held inside the dining hall and consisted of plotting, time/speed/distance calculations, nautical trivia, and morses code for bonus points. After this the Ship had completed all but one of the competitions. At 1530 all Ships were instructed to report to lakeside for the "Rowboat tug-of-war". Justin competed for Ship # 956 and did his best against a very large fellow from Ship # 12. The Ship spent much of the rest of the day lounging in the pool, playing pensil archery, and playing with other Ships in games such as volleyball. After dinner the new members of the Quarterdeck held their first official Quarterdeck meeting. At the meeting Sean explained each members responsibilities and the group worked together to formulate the agenda for the upcoming business meeting. In a change of events the Regatta Skipper decided to hold the awards ceremony Saturday night. Luckily the whole Ship was already in the dining hall and ready to receive their awards. . Sunday: After an hour of taking down camp and cleaning Mrs. Naclerio and Mrs. James showed up to pick up the youth. The duo was nice enough to bring along an assortment of Dunkin Donuts which the team devoured as an early breakfast. After quick "good-bye's" and "see-you-soon's" the Ship broke to head home from a long and event filled weekend. . Awards: . First Place:

After several meetings where the Ship was off the water practicing for the upcoming regatta it was nice to finally return to our passion - sailing. There was a good turn out and as Boatswain-Elect Dan was put in charge of dividing the Ship into crews of 4 that were not to include Sean or Mr. Klein. At this point one of the crews was assigned to Floating Bear and all others present went to Loree Anne. Those on Floating Bear were instructed to sail a short course around two marks by themselves without outside help. After completing this they anchored and Loree Anne came along side to switch crews. Due to lack of wind and other concerns the second team was not fully able to complete their mission. Afterwards Sean switched boats to accompany Floating Bear in as she came to dock under sail alone. After the meeting everyone stayed to help secure the boats for the impending storm. Overall it was a great evening and gave some of the newer members some much needed time in the decision making seat. Attendance included: Katie, Justin, Sabrina, Emily, Will and guest Mike, Dan, Sean, Andrew, Mr. Klein and DJ. . Drill Practice & Team Building - August 26, 2006
Today many of the members planning on attending the Poseidon Cup next weekend gathered at the Dunedin Marina for continuing practice of our Drill routine. Each member was drilled individually and then as a team unit. After Drill the Ship practiced tying a clove hitch around a tree with 100' line without getting any close to the tree than 5'. After all practice was done the Ship was supposed to go for a fun sail however due to inclement weather the youth decided to jointly see a movie instead. Members caravaned to the AMC 20 in Oldsmar to see "Accepted". Attendance included: Emily, Sean, Sabrina, Will and gues Mike, Dan, Tristen, Mr. Klein and DJ. . Meeting - Drill practice with Crew 976 - August 22, 2006 . Tonight was the final Monday night to practice our drill for the Poseidon Cup. The Ship learned the last of the facinig commands they will come up against at the competition. In addition to drilling Sean and Andrew paired of, as well as many other youths in an attempt to figure out the Clove Hitch competition. The rules state that you must tie a clove hitch correctly around a tree using rope but can not come closer than 5 feet to that tree. After much practice the Ship has worked out what we feel is the best technique to accomplish this task. Everyone was reminded of the Drill practice on Saturday and the following Fun Sail. Attendance included: Andrew, Anthony, MJ, Sabrina, Sean, Donnna, Will, and Dan. For the adults Mr. Klein and DJ. Eric H. and Chris N. joined the Ship again for the practice. . Meeting - Official Business Meeting - August 14th, 2006 . Called to Order: 1915

Meeting Adjourned: 2001 . Family Picnic - Anderson Park August 13th, 2006 . Ship 956 held the first annual family picnic today at Anderson park in Tarpon Springs. The Ship provided hot dogs and hamburgers as well as all the fixings. Each family was asked to bring a side dish. The goodies ranged from macaroni salad, brocoli salad, greek salad, and nachos to brownies, cupcakes, cookie cake, and chocolate covered rice crispy treats. After Mr. Klein prepared all the hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill everyone dove in for some great eats. After the food Mr. Klein presented a short program to the parents telling them what our Ship is about and some of our major yearly projects and activities. He also presented a yearly budget to explain how expensive running a Ship of this magnitude can be. After that Sean announced that the Ship had officially taken possession of a new boat, a 25 foot Erickson, to be picked up ASAP and stored at his house until the Dunedin Marina can make room for us. Floating Bear is up to be sold and we will need a work day to get her ready. After the meeting each youth stood and gave a brief speech about their favorite parts of the past year. Everyone talked about the regattas and the summer trips especially. After the meeting all the kids got together and set up a mock kick ball game. After only about 30 minutes the game broke up as everyone was ready to pass out from the heat. Everyone retreated to the shade for some more food and conversation. At about four everyone began to head home to get ready for the bid business meeting on monday. Thos who attended include: Katie and family, Dan, Emily and family, Will and family, Chris and family, Sean and family, Sabrina, Barchan, Bryce and family, Mr. Klein, Mr. Wesphall, and Holly Bird. . Tonight the Ship took out Loree Anne as well as 816's race boat, Mongoose. Crew 816 members Sean, Sabrina, Chris, and Tristen crewed Mongoose while Ship members Dan, Justin, Emily, Katie, Will, Donna, Julia, Mr. Klein and Mr. Westphall crewed Loree Anne. The wind was great for sailing and while Loree Anne enjoyed a relaxing sail members on Mongoose practiced with two spinnaker sets. Afterwards there was a mock war between the boats as Mongoose sailed circles around Loree Anne and crew exchanged fire with ammuntion of pretzels and fresh water. . Meeting - Official Business Meeting - July 17, 2006 .
. Day Sail- July 15, 2006 . A few of the Ship members met today for a short day sail on Loree Anne. The crew included Mr. Klein, D.J, Travis, Dan and Tristen. We set out around 9am, motor sailing out past the channel until we realized there was hardly any wind. Being a hot summer day in Florida, we decided to hope off, swim around and work on scraping the bottom of Loree Anne. On our way back to the marina we came upon Holly sailing her Melonseed. Travis joined her and they followed us back to the slip. We closed up the boat and left the marina around 12:15. Summer "A" 2006 - June 30 - July 9th, 2006 . Commentary to be posted. . For pictures of the trip CLICK HERE! . Meeting - Team Building Night (Educational Night Sail by QD vote) June 26, 2006 . Tonight the Quarterdeck decided to hold the Team Building night on the water and make it and Educational Night Sail. Because of the large turn out, the Ship was split into two crews. Katie was the XO of Loree Anne with Justin, Emily, Tristen, Sean, Sabrina, MJ, Jacob, and Mr. Klein. Floatin Bear, Led by DJ included: Bryce, Donna, Julia, Barchan, Anthony, Will, and Dan. The tides were extremely low and both vessels had difficulties with draft. Loree Anne chose to sail NW through the spoil islands towards Hurricane Pass while Floating Bear headed N along the channel. About an hour into the night Loree Anne received word via VHF that Floating Bear was hard aground and would need assistance. Loree Anne immediately adjusted course and started the engine to come to the aid of the other vessel. About 10 minutes later Loree Anne arrived and stayed at a safe distance to assess the situation. It was decided that Loree Anne would anchor south (upwind) of Floating Bear and drift down onto her. From there both vessels could be pulled using Loree Anne's anchor and engine. After several tries the rescue was successfull and both vessels, Floating Bear under tow, returned safely to port just before 10:00pm. . For pictures of the night CLICK HERE! . Sunfish Day - June 25, 2006 . Today Ship # 956 organized a Sunfish sailing day at the Dunedin Causeway. Mr. Rodgers picked up the trailer holding the Sunfish at Mr. Kleins house and had it ready at the Causeway at 11:00am. Dan, Will, and Tristen arrived first at 11:00 while Sean and Sabrina arrived just before noon. The Sunfish were unloaded under threatening skies and rigged. After setting them up the group divided into 2 man teams. Justin, Emily, and Katie showed up just a bit later after having competed in a Triatholon. The wind started very slow but progressively increased througout the day. The threatening skies passed over head with no rain. Attendance included: Dan, Barchan, Emily, Katie, Will, Tristen, Sabrina, Justin, and Sean, Mr. Rodgers and Mr. Westphall. . For pictures of the day CLICK HERE! . Meeting - Official Business Meeting June 19, 2006 . As this is not our normal Business meeting night, the Clubhouse at the Dunedin marina was in use. Holly graciously offered to let us use her house for the meeting. Holly went above and beyond cooking the entire crew a gourmet meal of Chili, assorted cheeses, cookies, grapes, crackers, salsa and chips, humus, iced tea, and lemonade. The meeting went very smoothly and all points were covered. Considering the size restraints of the livingroom turned mini auditorium the meeting went near flawlessly. For pictures of the night CLICK HERE! . Meeting - Official Business Meeting June 12, 2006 - Canceled Due to Weather / Summer Trip "B" . Tonight's meeting was canceled due to the fact that we had half our members away on Summer "B" as well as to inclement weather. The business meeting has been rescheduled for next monday 19-June-2006. The location is TBA by the Quarterdeck ASAP. . Summer Trip "B" 2006: June 11-13, 2006 . Summary courtesty of Katie - You Rock Katie! . Sunday, June 11, 2006 This weekend six members of Ship 956 and two adults braved Tropical Storm Alberto and sailed down to the Miami area. The crew consisted of Emily, Mary Jane, Katie, Dan, Justin, and Chris. The two brave adults were Mr. Klein and Mrs. Chambers. The trip began at around 1200 when we left the Ft. Lauderdale state park and headed for the Fun in the Sun marina. Upon arrival we found the boat, and we couldn’t wait to get on it. The boys stayed with Mr. Klein and got us checked in, while the girls, driven by Mr. Murphy, headed to the grocery store to help Mrs. Murphy and Maggie finish the shopping. After paying for all of the food, we headed back to the marina, and loaded the food on the boat. We ate lunch, and were all ready to go. We released the lines, put the boat in reverse, went a few feet, and hit a sand bar. The tide was really low and, just our luck, it was still going out. We waited for an hour or so. During our wait, we formed crews. The Alpha crew consisted of Dan and Katie; the Brave crew consisted of Justin and Emily; and the Charlie crew consisted of Chris and Mary Jane. By 645 the tide had come back up enough for us to begin our journey. We were off! The Alpha crew was on watch, so Dan took the helm while Katie sat at the bow on lookout. We motored to get gas and then we were off, for real this time. At 1800 the Bravo crew took over. Katie went down to the kitchen to start dinner. Chris joined her and helped make corn, and then he left her to help Dan with the chicken. The chicken did not cook as well on the grill as hoped, so we wound up stir frying some of it. Katie had been in the kitchen for an hour and a half when Mary Jane came down and told her to drop everything and go get some air. Mary Jane took over while Katie went up on deck to get some much needed air. When the first round of chicken was up, Chris and Mary Jane ate since they were the next people on watch. Then everyone else followed. The food turned out great! At 2000 the Charlie crew took over. Justin and Emily washed the dishes, while Katie and Dan headed to their cabins to rest up for the midnight watch. We sailed till about midnight, when we anchored in Biscayne Bay.
Monday, June 12, 2006 At 2400, the Alpha crew took over. Dan and Katie sat in the cockpit. Dan stayed awake by drinking Red Bull, while Katie tried really hard to stay awake (she did drift off a few times). They listened to music and got rained on, but when 0400 rolled around, they woke up the Bravo crew, Justin and Emily, and went to bed. When Emily got up to the cockpit, Justin was already asleep, so she fell asleep too. They were a great watch crew! Just before 0800, when the Charlie crew had to take over, Chris woke Katie up and said “I’m hungry”. She looked at him like he was crazy! After a minute she got up. She got down the cereal, milk, donuts, bagels, cream cheese, plates and napkins. Breakfast was served! Everyone ate up and the day had begun. Before we sailed away for the day, we decided to take the dinghy to the land for a little adventure. Chris, Mary Jane, and Dan went first. They had no problems with the dinghy and were back in half an hour. Then Emily, Katie, and Justin went for a ride. Katie started out steering, and then Justin took over. After he took over the engine stopped. Katie and Emily couldn’t stop laughing. We were paddling but not going very far. Justin kept talking to the engine and getting really mad. Then, he attempted to push Katie overboard. She caught herself and didn’t fall in. Once again, we were laughing at Justin. He got mad, again, and pushed Katie again. This time she wasn’t as balanced and fell in! Emily and Justin helped her back in and we drifted into a boat. The lady was nice and offered us a tow, but we declined her offer since we were on an adventure. We paddled our way to the land, where Emily supposedly went and flagged down help. After 10 minutes the Zephyrus hadn’t moved so Katie went to flag down help. Our rescue was there in 5 minutes. The weather wasn’t the best, it was gray and overcast. The radio called for some rough weather due to Alberto. We decided that it would be best to not go too far south and to find somewhere to snorkel close by. So we sailed around all day. We all took turns at helm. This was a fun day. We had waves of up to 8 ft! They proved exciting. At 1200 the Alpha crew took over, but before they did, Katie and Dan got lunch ready. Today’s lunch consisted of sandwiches and chips, once again a serve yourself. The Alpha crew sailed till 1600, when the Bravo crew took over. We stopped in the afternoon, on our way back towards Biscayne Bay, and snorkeled around a big branch. We all looked good in our snorkel gear! The fish count was one, and only Mary Jane saw it. The snorkeling was fun, even though it was in three feet of water. After snorkeling, we all took a well needed dinghy shower. The guys went first while the girls floated in the water. When they were all done the girls got up and shampooed away! When they were all soaped up, they counted to three and jumped in the water, well Katie didn’t, she missed that memo. After the dinghy shower, we had dinner. On the menu were hamburgers and chips. The boys manned the grill as Katie passed out the fixings. Once again, the food was great. At 1800 the Charlie crew took over, and Mr. Klein radioed to the Dinner Key Marina and asked for a dock slip. We were granted slip 35 at pier 7 on the north side so we set our sails to the marina. We docked the boat and went to hit the streets for a few hours. We walked into several shops and got ice cream. After a few hours we made our way back to the boat. At 2030 we motored to Key Biscayne. Mr. Klein and Mrs. Chambers were kind enough to motor us back to Key Biscayne while we had a party on the bow of the boat. We anchored at around 2100. Tonight no one had to stay on watch since we were in the inlet. Emily and Katie fell asleep while the others played a loud game of poker.
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 By 0600 everyone was awake and the anchor had been lifted. We motored out of the inlet and tied up the dinghy. The Charlie crew got us started on our way home, but not before breakfast. Once again, we had cereal, donuts, and bagels. At 0800 the Alpha crew took over. Dan was in the mood for sailing and sailed just about all four hours. We sailed back to the Fun in Sun marina. We got there at about 1230. Katie’s and Chris’ parents were at the dock to meet the group. The girls cleaned out the kitchen and we all packed up our gear. We piled into cars and prepared for the ride home. The trip was amazing, and it is something we will never forget. Thanks Mr. Klein for the adventure of a life time!!! . For pictures of the trip CLICK HERE! . Commodore's Cup Regatta 2006: June 9-11, 2006 . Friday: This years Commodore's Cup was moved from Miami, as in years passed, to a state park in Ft. Lauderdale. Friday's plan was to meet at Bruce's house and then for all vehicles to depart together. From the start we realized it was going to be a long day. Skipper Mr. Klein was late due to complications with the Sunfish trailer. Upon arrival Sean and Barchan went outside to find half of the trailer laying on the side of the road. A large amount of hard core ingenuity, a dozen lines, and some PVC glue later, the trailer was back in one piece and ready for the long haul. Under the direction of Sean, Sabrina and Jacob plotted a course for the day calculating distances traveled, course angles, and time between waypoints using nautical charts, parrallels, and a divider. The crew also found position using relative bearings to landmarks. Weather conditions were cool, wind was Northerly starting at 10-12 kts. increasing to 15-18 kts. as the day progressed. Original plotted course was North through Dunedin Causeway to a point midway between markers 29 and 30, then due West through the pass to a point approximately one nautical mile offshore followed by a Southerly turn to a point just off of Hurricane Pass. The original course concluded by entering Hurricane Pass and returning to Dunedin Marina. Due to shoals caused by last year's hurricane season not denoted on the nautical charts, the plotted course was altered to returning to Dunedin Marina using the Intercoastal Waterway. Sabrina and Jacob both gained experience using the ship's VHF to hail the Dunedin Causeway bridge. Anchoring procedures were also taught after having located a 2-3 ft. mound on nautical charts using relative bearings. The ship took this time to anchor and enjoy lunch. .
